The 15th of May, 2024, will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the standout moments of the year. That day, the internet was abuzz with excitement as people got paid just by tapping their phone screens. What followed over the next couple of months was reminiscent of what might happen if Nigerians were ever given a heads-up on judgment day – “As per, una know say naija no dey carry last.”

From notifications that grandmothers had joined Telegram to keke drivers pausing their journeys to complete daily claims on various Tap apps, the frenzy was everywhere. People of all walks of life – young and old, corporate workers and business people, employed and unemployed alike – were caught up in the madness. After all, “who no like free money”?

This wave of excitement began when several cryptocurrency projects launching on the TON Blockchain partnered with the Telegram app to onboard new community members. In return, those members were rewarded with airdrops of the project’s tokens. Users could claim these tokens by tapping or completing various tasks within the Telegram mini-apps associated with those projects. The pioneer of this trend was the Notcoin project.

June came and went, and people were still tapping. By July, the tapping continued. But by August, the majority of people had grown tired, abandoned the apps, and returned to their normal lives. It turned out that the idea of “free money” was misleading – users had to invest significant time, and many Nigerians didn’t realize that some of these projects already had roadmaps, while others were outright scams designed to farm engagement on social platforms.

For those who still have their Telegram app installed, there may yet be some rewards for their efforts. Some of the legitimate projects on the TON Blockchain have road maps indicating launches in the third quarter of 2024. Below are a few projects worth checking out, based on their roadmaps.

sets.
