The 15th of May, 2024, will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the standout moments of the year. That day, the internet was abuzz with excitement as people got paid just by tapping their phone screens. What followed over the next couple of months was reminiscent of what might happen if Nigerians were ever given a heads-up on judgment day – “As per, una know say naija no dey carry last.”
From notifications that grandmothers had joined Telegram to keke drivers pausing their journeys to complete daily claims on various Tap apps, the frenzy was everywhere. People of all walks of life – young and old, corporate workers and business people, employed and unemployed alike – were caught up in the madness. After all, “who no like free money”?
This wave of excitement began when several cryptocurrency projects launching on the TON Blockchain partnered with the Telegram app to onboard new community members. In return, those members were rewarded with airdrops of the project’s tokens.
