Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have advanced to the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco following a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Venezuela in their quarter-final encounter.

Azeezat Oduntan proved to be Nigeria’s match-winner, converting a late penalty in the 89th minute to break Venezuela’s resistance and secure the West Africans’ place in the last four.

With the contest appearing destined for extra time, Oduntan kept her composure from the penalty spot to hand Nigeria a crucial victory in a closely fought encounter.

The win continues the Flamingos’ impressive run in the tournament and keeps alive their hopes of winning their first FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.

Nigeria had earlier demonstrated their determination by defeating Mexico in the Round of 16 before overcoming Venezuela to progress to the semi-finals.

The Flamingos will now face another South American side Brazil on Wednesday, with a place in the final at stake.

The Nigerian youngsters will be hoping to maintain their momentum against Brazil as they move a step closer to making history by claiming the country’s first title in the competition.

Their victory over Venezuela once again highlighted the team’s resilience and ability to deliver under pressure at a crucial stage of the tournament.
