Gov. Diri Preseason: Ahudiyannem Queens Rally from Disappointment To Secure Third Place In Yenagoa

Ahudiyannem Queens FC demonstrated resilience and determination to finish third at the 2026 Governor Diri Women’s Pre-Season Football Tournament, defeating hosts Bayelsa Queens FC 8–7 in a penalty shootout after a tense 0–0 draw at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa.

The victory provided a fitting response to a difficult period for the Queens, who suffered consecutive defeats to Rivers Angels and Delta Queens, including a painful semi-final exit on penalties. The setbacks dampened the team’s morale and raised doubts about their ability to finish the competition strongly after missing out on their target of reaching the final.

Despite the disappointment, Ahudiyannem Queens refused to allow their campaign to end on a sour note. They regrouped and approached the third-place encounter against Bayelsa Queens with renewed determination, producing a spirited performance against the tournament hosts.

The regulation 90 minutes proved to be a tough battle from start to finish, with both sides working hard to gain the advantage. However, neither team could find a breakthrough, leaving the encounter goalless at the final whistle and forcing the contest to be decided by penalties.

In the ensuing shootout, Ahudiyannem Queens held their nerve under pressure, converting their kicks to edge Bayelsa Queens 8–7 and secure third place in the tournament.

The result marked a significant turnaround for the team, having suffered the disappointment of losing their semi-final encounter through the same method. This time, the Queens emerged victorious, turning their earlier frustration into a moment of celebration.

Technical Adviser Adanna Nwaneri Anah expressed her excitement after the victory, describing the experience as overwhelming and giving thanks to God for the opportunity to celebrate.

“This victory is so amazing, so beautiful. In fact, I don’t know how to describe it. It is so overwhelming. I am happy, I am grateful to God who gave us this opportunity to celebrate. I return all the glory to God,” she said.

The Queens had enjoyed an impressive group-stage campaign, winning all three matches to finish top of Group B with nine points before progressing to the semi-finals.

Although they fell short of reaching the final, their victory over Bayelsa Queens ensured they ended the competition on a positive note, providing a confidence boost and valuable preparation for the upcoming 2026/2027 Nigeria Women Football League season.

Ahudiyannem Queens got icing on their cake as their striker Temitope Owoeye won the individual award for the highest goal scorer with three goals.

Meanwhile, Nasarawa Amazons retained the tournament title after recording a 1–0 victory over Delta Queens in the final.

For Ahudiyannem Queens, the third-place finish represents more than a podium achievement. It reflects the team’s ability to recover from setbacks, respond to criticism and finish the tournament with renewed belief as they turn their attention to the challenges ahead.
