Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has unveiled plans for a statewide grassroots football championship, the 2026 Governor’s Cup in partnership with Super Eagles legend, Kanu Nwankwo.
The project was unveiled in Yola when Kanu, who is also Chairman of Enyimba FC, led a delegation to the Government House to present the blueprint for the competition.
Conceived as a talent discovery drive, the tournament will be staged across the 21 Local Government Areas of Adamawa, targeting young players in rural and underserved communities who lack platforms to showcase their abilities. The initiative will connect them directly to scouts and professional opportunities.
Governor Fintiri said his administration sees sports as a strategic tool for youth engagement and empowerment, lamenting that despite Adamawa’s huge pool of football talents, many have been held back by limited exposure.
Kanu, named Ambassador of the competition, said the project offers a chance to give back to the game that made him.
According to him, his experience as a former African Footballer of the Year and now a club administrator will help create a clear pathway from community football to the elite level.
Under the arrangement, all 21 LGAs will field teams, regional games will be monitored by local and foreign scouts, and the final is expected to be staged at the new ultramodern stadium being built by the state government — if completed on schedule.
The Governor’s Cup, stakeholders say, goes beyond winning a trophy. It is about building a future for Adamawa’s next generation of football stars.
