Organizers of the Ifeanyi Ekwueme TICO/Select Preseason Tournament are under pressure to consider staging a separate competition for Nigeria National League, NNL clubs, following a request from teams in the division.
Several NNL clubs have pleaded with the CEO of the TICO/Select Preseason Tournament, Ex International, Ifeanyi Ekwueme to organize a dedicated tournament to match their season preparation timeline.
According to the clubs, some of teams are scheduled to begin training close to the start date of the 8th edition, making it difficult to participate in the main event.
The 8th Ifeanyi Ekwueme TICO/Select Preseason Tournament is scheduled for 5th to 12th August 2026 in Enugu and Owerri.
Widely regarded as one of the strongest preseason competitions in Nigeria, the tournament typically features a mix of NPFL, NNL, NLO teams and academies.
It provides top-flight clubs with competitive build-up games, while offering lower-tier sides and academies exposure against higher-level opposition ahead of the new season.
Speaking on the request, the organizers acknowledged the concerns raised by the NNL clubs.
“To run this tournament is capital intensive. So I will have to discuss with my management and try to figure out something for the NNL clubs,” the CEO said.
The TICO/Select Preseason Tournament has, over 8 editions, established itself as more than just football but a platform for talent discovery, youth empowerment, unity and raising standards in the country.
Champions of the title decider receive gold medals and a giant trophy, while runners-up get 25 silver medals.
With support from partners including Toscana Hotel, Aaron Suites, Prossy Investment Ltd, and Emeks Sports & Boutique Nig Ltd, organizers say any decision on a separate NNL tournament will be made after consultations with management.
