UNICAL VC Announces 50 Academic Staff Promotions

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Offiong Efana Offiong, has announced the promotion of 50 academic staff to the professorial cadre. The announcement was made during an Emergency Meeting of the Senate held on Monday, March 30, 2026.

According to Professor Offiong, 27 staff members were elevated to the rank of Associate Professor, while 23 were promoted to the rank of full Professor. The newly promoted academics were urged to rededicate themselves to excellence in teaching, research, and service to humanity.

Some of those promoted to Associate Professor include Dr. Abu Solomon Edet (History and Int’l Studies), Francis Aniezi Nwagwu (Crop Science), and Dr. Emmanuel Bassey Effa (Crop Science). Those elevated to the rank of Professor include Betiang Liwhuliwhe (Theatre and Media Studies), Etuk Ekanem Abasiekong (Agricultural Economics), and Oku Affiong Oboko (Community Medicine).

Professor Offiong congratulated the newly promoted academics, emphasizing the importance of excellence in their fields. The promotions are part of the university’s efforts to recognize and reward academic excellence.
