Head of the Mass Communication Department, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Professor Allen Adum has shared initiatives for improvement and enhancement of students’ skills development and career prospects.

In an interview with Unizik FM, he emphasized that students pursuing mass communication should be passionate about the field, as it’s a vital area with numerous specializations, including journalism, broadcasting, advertising, and public relations.

According to Prof Adum, the department has approved several programs with over 100 students participating in each, including broadcasting, journalism, media industries, advertising, development communication studies, information and media studies, statistics communication, public relations, and film and multi-media studies.

Professor Adum stressed that mass communication students should be good communicators in all languages and encouraged them to develop skills in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to boost their career prospects.

He highlighted advancements in the Industrial Training (IT) session, where students will now go for IT as Library Science students, addressing the misconception that mass communication students aren’t meant to undergo IT.

This change, initiated by his predecessor Dr. Chioma Agbasimelo aims to provide students with practical experience.

Professor Adum said one of his goals for the department include unbundling it into a faculty, which he said has been challenging due to inadequate facilities.

He informed that he has achieved 80% of this goal and is working with colleagues and potential donors to secure more resources.

The professor of Mass Communication advised students to leverage AI and industry opportunities to excel in mass communication, emphasizing the importance of promoting the field globally.
