In a night of glitz and pride, the Super Falcons were crowned National Team of the Year 2026 at the New Telegraph Awards in Lagos.
The award was proudly received on behalf of the team by Aisha Falode, respected Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) board member and distinguished sports administrator.
Falode, a former top sports journalist and the former chairperson of the Nigeria Women Football League, has been a trailblazer for women in football. Her leadership and commitment to advancing women’s participation in African football are widely recognized, including her recent appointment to global football committee in recognition of her contributions to the game.
Receiving the award in front of Nigeria’s sporting elite, Falode paid tribute to the Super Falcons’ remarkable achievements and their undying spirit. “This award is not just for the Super Falcons — it is for every Nigerian who believes in the strength, resilience and brilliance of our women,” she said. Falode highlighted the significance of the team’s 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title as a sign of their sustained excellence and dominance in African football.
The Super Falcons’ record-extending 10th continental title, secured in Morocco with a stunning comeback victory over hosts in the 2025 WAFCON final, captivated the nation and the continent alike. Trailing 2–0 at halftime, Nigeria rallied with goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and a late winner, showcasing the team’s trademark resilience and tactical brilliance.
The NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau lauded both the team and the award, emphasizing the Falcons’ role in raising the profile of Nigerian football and inspiring future generations of players across Africa.
The Falcons’ feats have also sparked broader ambitions, with qualification secured for the upcoming 2026 WAFCON and hopes high for continued success on the road to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
