SWAN Honours Patrick Ngwaogu (Odogwu) With Veteran Sports Journalist Award At 60th Anniversary

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has announced veteran sports journalist Patrick Ngwaogu, fondly known as Odogwu, as one of the recipients of its prestigious Veteran Sports Journalist Award. The honour comes as part of the association’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration, marking 60 years of dedication to sports journalism in Nigeria.

In a formal letter signed by the SWAN Secretary-General, Ikenna Okonkwo, the association lauded Ngwaogu’s “outstanding contributions, professionalism, and enduring service to the growth and integrity of sports journalism in Nigeria.”

The award will be presented during the SWAN @60 Award and Appeal Fund Ceremony, slated for October 31, 2025, at the VIP Lounge, Package A, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

“Your commitment, mentorship, and passion for the craft have inspired generations of journalists and enriched the nation’s sporting narrative,” the letter read in part.

Ngwaogu who is Editor in chief of Exclusive News Online Newspaper is also a trained football coach. He had worked with the Nigerian Tribune and the Nation newspapers. He was a former Sporting Director of Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia and former First Vice Chairman of the FCT Football Association and also former Secretary of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association, FCT Chapter.

Odogwu who has played a pivotal roles in mentoring and unifying sports journalists in the country. He has promoted excellence in sports reportage over the decades.

As SWAN celebrates its 60th anniversary, the recognition of Mr. Ngwaogu stands as a testament to the legacy of those who have shaped the landscape of sports journalism in Nigeria. The event promises to gather the crème of the nation’s sporting and media communities in a moment of reflection and celebration.

SWAN’s Diamond Jubilee activities will run from October 29 to 31, 2025, featuring symposiums, legacy projects, and the award ceremony, where other distinguished members and stakeholders will also be honoured.
