November 8th: NUJ Shifts Gubernatorial Debate

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Anambra state Council has shifted the date for the debate for candidates of the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

In a press release signed by the Secretary, Dr Okechukwu Onuegbu, the Council regrets to put on hold the much anticipated debate.

The council explained that the decision was taken due to complicated unforeseen circumstances and some poor excuses from some candidates.

“The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Anambra State Council regrets to put on hold the very much prepared debate for the Deputy Governor and Governorship Candidates slated for 8th and 15th October, 2025 respectively ahead of the November 8, gubernatorial election in the state”,

“This uneasy decision arose from complicated unforeseen circumstances”,

“It is ridiculous for us to hear from some candidates that they were not given the invitation letter early enough for debate that the NUJ leadership ensured the best fairness in the delivery of the letters. It should be noted that the invitation letter for the debate was simultaneously hand delivered on 16th September, 2025, to every campaign office of all the respective candidates of each political party for the election”,

“We firmly urge the candidates who have complained about the late receipt of our letter to question the internal responsiveness of their aides. It is incredible that the same official aides who failed woefully in their duties have the effrontry to suspect a plot to shortchange their political party’s candidates”,

“The NUJ Anambra State Council believes in equity, fairness, justice, and will continue to give a level-playing ground for all the political parties’ candidates in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state”,

“We call on all candidates of the political parties with their supporters to shun all irrelevant scheming to thwart the NUJ’s pursuit of fair play for the debate in particular and the election in general”,

“We advocate for the candidates with their supporters to imbibe and clearly demonstrate the spirit of good sportsmanship before, during and after the election”,

“We hereby express our deepest regrets over the disappointments and inconveniences this sudden suspension of the debate will cause the candidates and the general public”,

“We shall communicate the new dates and the venue for the debate as soon as possible. With utmost regards we thank you for your understanding”.
