Nnamdi Azikiwe University Security team led by the Chief Safety Officer (CSO), yesterday arrested some final-year students for violating the institution’s ban on “signing off” activities.
The students, were apprehended immediately after completing their final exams for engaging in the banned tradition, despite the university’s recent directive.
It would be recalled that Nnamdi Azikiwe University has indefinitely banned final-year students from participating in “signing off” activities, a tradition associated with the end of final examinations.
The decision was announced through a memo signed by the Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Okeke, on August 19, 2025.
According to the university management, the ban is a response to recurring incidents of chaos, violence, and disruption of normal academic activities linked to these events.
The management also expressed concerns about unauthorized individuals exploiting these gatherings, posing a threat to the safety and security of students, staff, and the broader community.
It said that any student found participating in these banned activities risks severe disciplinary measures, including rustication.
Additionally, outsiders entering the campus to support such activities may face arrest and prosecution for disorderly conduct and breach of peace.
The university emphasized its commitment to maintaining order, protecting lives and property, and providing a secure environment for academic pursuits. Students are urged to focus on their academic responsibilities and report any instances of misconduct or safety threats to the appropriate authorities.
