The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has suspended the registration of Adewale Adeyinka, a player for Plateau United FC, due to allegations of insider betting.
The suspension was announced in a letter dated August 5, 2025, signed by Davidson Owumi, Chief Operating Officer of the NPFL.
According to the letter, the suspension is a result of an ongoing investigation into allegations made by Plateau United FC against Adeyinka. The club alleged that Adeyinka refused to sign a contract with a prospective new club because the contract included a clause for immediate termination in case of betting implications.
The NPFL emphasized that the allegations against Adeyinka should be treated with “utmost seriousness and urgency” citing Article 15.5 section B of the Framework and Rules of the NPFL. This article prohibits players from involvement in betting, with punishments outlined under section C of the same rules.
Adeyinka will be invited to state his defense on the allegations as the investigation proceeds. The NPFL noted that involvement in betting diminishes the integrity of the league and brings the game into disrepute. Adeyinka’s registration will be considered for reinstatement after the investigation if he is found not to be involved in any wrongdoing.
The suspension highlights the NPFL’s stance on maintaining the integrity of the league and ensuring adherence to its rules regarding betting.
