Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State, has commissioned solar-powered projects aimed at providing uninterrupted power supply and improving living conditions for students residing in the university hostels.
The project was commissioned by the Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Barr. Olugbenga Kukoyi, on July 24, 2025.
The project includes solar-powered boreholes for efficient water supply, charging points, lighting points, and free internet services.
The solar-powered projects were commissioned at five university hostels: Basil Oli Hostel, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Hostel, Dora Akunyili Hostel, Stella Okoli Hostel, and Oby Okoli Hostel.
The project is expected to enhance students’ living conditions, creating a more conducive environment for academic pursuit.
Commissioning the projects, the Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council, Barr. Olugbenga Kukoyi commended the Acting Vice-Chancellor for her motherly love and concern for the welfare of the students of the institution.
Barr. Kukoyi who was represented by an external member of the Council, Mrs. Amina Elizabeth Yakowa stated that the solar project will enhance the student’s living conditions as well as better their academic pursuit.
The Acting VC charged the hostel leadership and the entire students of the Hostels to ensure they do not abuse the privileges made available to them by the University management but to help in managing the projects for greater efficiency and longevity.
The President of the Student Hostel, Odinaka Elusiuba, thanked the Council Members and Prof. Arinze-Umobi for their kind gesture, expressing gratitude on behalf of the students.
The solar-powered project is part of the university’s efforts to improve students’ living conditions and academic experience. The initiative reflects the institution’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for its students.
