The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has raised concerns over a disturbing trend in Anambra State, where young people are allegedly cohabiting solely to produce babies for sale.
According to the Anambra State Commander of NAPTIP, Ibadin Judith-Chukwu, this trend is prevalent in rural communities, where girls are often deceived into getting pregnant, and their babies are sold without their knowledge or consent.
Judith-Chukwu emphasized the need for widespread public enlightenment to combat human trafficking and baby sales in the state.
She noted that NAPTIP has established state task forces to address the issue, particularly in rural areas where it is most prevalent.
The NAPTIP Commander called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other influential figures to join the fight against human trafficking, which she described as “organized crime.”
She also highlighted the agency’s efforts to engage critical stakeholders and sensitize the public about the deceptive tactics used by traffickers.
