The stage is set for a sizzling Holy Saturday clash as wounded NPFL giants Enyimba FC welcome fierce rivals Kano Pillars to the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba, in a mouthwatering Match Day 34 encounter kicking off at 4pm.
Reeling from back-to-back heartbreaks — a damaging league loss to Sunshine Stars in Ijebu-Ode and a shocking Federation Cup elimination at the hands of National League minnows, Abakaliki FC — the People’s Elephant are desperate to roar back to life before their passionate faithful. With their continental hopes now hanging by a thread, anything short of maximum points would further dim Enyimba’s flickering ambitions.
Since 2010, Enyimba and Pillars have clashed 25 times in fiercely contested battles, with Kano Pillars edging the head-to-head 12 wins to 11, and just two encounters ending in stalemates. Saturday promises to be yet another chapter of fireworks between two of Nigeria’s most successful and popular sides, both looking to salvage pride after crashing out of the Federation Cup.
For Enyimba, the stakes are sky-high. The return of players such as Solomon Ogberahwe, Quadri Olusokanmi, Mujeeb Odufeso, Afolayan Peters, and Isah Mohammed — all of whom missed the cup upset in Asaba — offers a timely boost with Brown Ideye also knocking for inclusion after a first half show in Asaba. However, the Aba giants will have to do without forward Nnaji Christian, who picked up a knee injury midweek. Bright spark Joseph Atule, however, is expected to feature and could hold the key to unlocking Pillars’ defense.
On the other side, the ‘Sai Masu Gida’ brigade will once again look to their evergreen talisman Rabiu Ali and the returning former Super Eagles captain Musa Ahmed, both injecting leadership and grit into a team still licking wounds from a turbulent campaign.
When both sides met in Kano, Pillars ran away with a two goal victory which makes it a more fierce battle in Aba.
With both sides hungry for redemption, and with pride, prestige, and fan loyalty on the line, expect fireworks in Aba. As the Easter spirit of hope and renewal fills the air, Enyimba will hope to resurrect their season with a rousing performance, while Kano Pillars will aim to play spoilers in what promises to be an electrifying spectacle.
