The Management, players and Supporters of Enyimba Football club have joined the football community in mourning the passing of Nigeria’s greatest football icon, Christian Chukwu who died on Saturday, 12 April 2025
In a statement signed by the club chairman, former Super Eagles Captain, Kanu Nwankwo described the death of the legend as a great loss to the football family.
“It is with profound sadness that Enyimba FC learned of the passing of legendary Nigerian footballer and coach, Christian Chukwu Okoro, who departed this life today, April 12, 2025, at the age of 74”,
“Christian Chukwu was a stalwart of Nigerian football, renowned for his exceptional defensive skills as a player and his tactical acumen as a coach. As captain of the Nigerian national team, he led the Green Eagles to their first Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1980, a testament to his leadership and dedication”,
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and the entire football fraternity who have lost a true icon. We take comfort in the indelible mark he left on Nigerian football and the memories of his achievements on and off the pitch”,
I Nwankwo Kanu, Chairman of Enyimba FC, had the privilege of playing under Christian Chukwu’s guidance at the national team, and I remember him fondly as a mentor and a legend of the game”,
“We stand in solidarity with the football community in mourning this loss and celebrate the life and legacy of Christian Chukwu. May his soul rest in perfect peace”.
