Former Lawmaker, Farouk Lawan, has regained freedom after serving a five-year sentence at Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja for bribery.

Mr Lawan, once chaired the House Ad hoc committee investigating the 2012 multi-billion naira petrol subsidy fraud,

He walked free today, marking the end of his legal ordeal.

The former lawmaker was convicted in June 2021 to serve seven years after he was found guilty of accepting a $500,000 bribe from Femi Otedola, the then-chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited, during a sting operation set up by the businessman.

The bribe was linked to the subsidy probe, where Lawan had allegedly agreed to remove Zenon from the list of companies implicated in the fraud.

The Supreme Court earlier this year upheld the $500,000 Bribe Conviction and affirmed Five-Year Sentence for the Ex-Reps Member.

In a statement after his release, Mr Lawan penned an emotional message of gratitude where he said today marks the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

The statement read:

PRESS STATEMENT

I Thank Almighty Allah – Hon Farouk Lawan

Alhamdulillah
Alhamdulillah
Alhamdulillah

Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life as I step out of Kuje Custodial Centre, with a heart full of gratitude to Allah SWT for seeing me through this trial.

My gratitude is deep, I’m alive and in good health and high spirits to be with my family, friends and associates. I don’t take that for granted.

I remain grateful and indebted to my family and friends who stood by me through this particularly trying phase of my life.

May Allah SWT bless you🙏

Signed
Hon. Farouk Mohammed Lawan
