UNIZIK: Department Of Human Kinetics Holds Induction For Freshers And 200 Level Students

The Department of Human Kinetics, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka on Wednesday, 31st July 2024 held a glittering Induction Ceremony for freshers and 200 level students of the Department.

The induction ceremony which was held at the Multipurpose Hall of the institution was to formally welcome the new entrants into the Department and the University proper as well as to inundate them on the programmes and activities of the department and what is expected from the students by the institution.

In her opening remarks, the Head of the Department of Human Kinetics, Dr. Theresa Uzor stated that the induction ceremony for the current academic session is unique as sporting activities was mainstreamed as part of activities for the unique event. The scholar informed that the Department under her watch wants to showcase sports participation as a vital component of human existence and activities.

Dr. Uzor said: “This year’s induction ceremony under my way is unique as we mainstreamed sporting programmes such as football, athletics, badminton and other events as part of activities leading to the induction ceremony proper for both the new intake and 200 level students.

“We want our students to practice what we preach and as part of the induction ceremony which will feature oath taking by the students, career talk, dance, drama and cultural dance, we will reward the students at various levels with trophies, medals and certificate presentations for their heroics during the week long event,” Uzor said.

The HOD admonished the student to double their effort in the course of their academic pursuit by studying hard, remaining focused and disciplined, attending to their lectures and eschewing all forms of social vices in order to excel within their short stay in the ivory tower.

Delivering a talk on Career Opportunities for Human Kinetics, the Departmental Staff Adviser, Dr. Nonye Ujuagu defined career as the job or profession that someone does for a long period of their life which is significant in shaping one’s activity through the course of life. The scholar informed that Human Kinetics has a wild field of endeavour and study such as sports psychology, sports administration, sports engineering, sports sociology, sports journalism, sports dietician, physical therapy and other aspects of the discipline too numerous to mention.

Dr. Ujuagu also disclosed that upon graduation, academic products of Human Kinetics are awarded a Bachelor of Education or Bachelor of Science degree certification which can enable them work as Health and Physical Education teachers in post-primary schools as well as teaching staff in tertiary institutions with additional qualifications such as M.Sc. and PhD.

In the results of the sporting events which featured all levels from 100 to 400, the overall winner of all the events went to 100 level with a giant trophy and medals, overall winner in the female sporting events went to 400 level while male football champions trophy went to 100 level.

Highlights of the ceremony was the administration of the Oath to the students, distribution of certificates and awards, trophy presentation to various levels, drama and cultural dance.
