The President of the Association of Professional Women Engineers (APWEN), Engr Dr Adebisi Osim, has assured that her Association is committed to paving way for education of young girl-child engineers to provide innovation for Nigerias’ development.
Osim gave the assurance during the STEM for all Program, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, Anambra state yesterday, organised by the Southeast zone of APWEN, stressing that that engineering
is key to innovation and development which drives solutions to some of the pressing global challenges in Nigeria and the world in general.
The President also disclosed that APWEN strives at breaking down barriers, provide support and the resources needed for the emergence of young females to succeed as next generation of engineers in Nigeria.
She pointed out that the global challenges ranges from climate change to infrastructure development and even beyond.
She said, “APWEN is committed to challenging stereotypes, paving the way for the next generation of engineers to provide innovation for Nigerias’ development and providing resources for the next generation of engineers who will lead with innovation and integrity..
“We believe that diversity is not just a value; it is a necessity. When we promote inclusivity in engineering, we unlock a wealth of ideas, creativity, and solutions that can drive sustainable development.
“Our mission is to create an environment where everyone, particularly women an underrepresented groups, can thrive in engineering. We are committed to breaking down barriers, challenging stereotypes, and providing the support and resources needed for success.
“Through mentorship programs, scholarships, workshops, and advocacy, we are paving the way for the next generation of engineers who will lead with innovation and integrity”.
She urged the students to embrace this opportunity to learn, network, and envision the future in engineering, reminding that the passion and determination are the driving forces that will propel Nigeria’s society toward sustainable development.
Earlier, the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Prof Joseph Nwaigbo, urged the students to embrace courses in science, technology, engineering and mathematics among others, offered in higher institutions, insisting that NAU has many programs that encourages youths to gain admission.
Nwaigbo said, “I wish to encourage youths, particularly our students study Science and Technology, assuring that these courses encourage creativity, promotes production and self reliance.
“All things visible depends on STEM. Engineering has very strong aspects of STEM which is vital to the nation’s development and progress”.
He regretted that Nigeria is lacking behind in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) which is vital for development.
The highlights of the event the competion APWEN organised for the five Secondary schools that graced the occasion, including, Community High school Akwueze which came first, At. Patrick’s College, Awka (2nd), Unizik High school, (3rd) and Blossom Forte College (4th).
The students including, Margareth Molokwu and Ezeakanne Chinoyelum thanked the organizers for not only bringing different schools and students together, but also exposed them to benefits of studying science, engineering and technology courses.
Dr Osim pledged payment for the next term to all the students who represented Community High school Akwueze for emerging first, and also awarded them certificates of participation.
