In view of rising tension, insecurities and internal restiveness within communities in Anambra state, the reigning traditional ruler of Ideani, in Idemili North Council of the state, Igwe Steve Ezeji has constituted an eighteen (18) memberl Elders Council to assist him in the management and supervision of community affairs, peace and realtime arbitration.
Setting up the Council which according to palace sources was sequel to the provisions of Sec 35(g) of Ideani community’s Constitution 2012, as amended.
In a statement signed by the Secretary of the Igwe-In-Council, Chief Theo Ikenwa(Ichie Okenya), the Council of Elders was constitutionally meant to assist the Eze-In-Council in the dispensation of justice and arbitration matters, as well as other advisory roles.
The Chairman of the Council is the Ezeani-Ideani, (Chief Nonso Nzenwokwu), as per Sec 34(2) of the community’s operational 2012 Constitution.
Other members include Messrs Obichukwu Ezika, Basil Ojukwu, Gilbert Umeji and Nze Alex Okide.
Also included were Nze Rufus Okoye, Nze Ubanwa Onyenwozor, and Nze Sebastian Okonkwo amongst others.
The statement was made available to journalists in Awka this afternoon and disclosed that the Council has since commenced duty.
Chief Ikenwa in an interview confirmed that the State Government through the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government/Chieftaincy Matters, Chief Tony Collins Nwabunwanne has been officially communicated.
He pointed out that part of the purpose and benefits of the Council of Elders was for the enhancement and promotion of communal unity, peaceful coexistence brotherly cohesion in Ideani community.
He stated that in view of widespread restiveness in the country, community heads as the Chief Security Officers of their domains were expected to rise up the occasion in adopting all necessary workable ways to instil firm control.
He pointed out that the members were painstakingly selected from diverse segments of the community for even spread.
