Despite a disappointing result against struggling Akwa United, Enyimba Gaffer, Coach Finidi George believes his side can still achieve their ambition in the league this season.
A sloppy defending and poor communication by the People’s Elephant at the back gave the Promise Keeper an early lead which gave Enyimba tough times to settle and get going in the game.
In the 51st minute, the hosts doubled their advantage when Sani Suleman rounded off Olorunleke Ojo.
Rays of light came when top scorer, Chijioke Mbaoma was fouled inside the Akwa United penalty area resulting to a penalty which he converted to increase his tally to 11 goals.
Mbaoma is in pole position to gun for the league’s top soccer award however missed two clear opportunities to restore parity for the league leaders and even win the game before the former league champions got the icing on the cake when Enyimba had committed bodies in search of equaliser during the 6 minutes added time.
Reacting after the encounter at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo marking the return of the home side to their traditional home after getting NPFL approval, Coach Finidi expressed his dismay over the attitude of Akwa United ball boys saying it wasn’t a good image for the league and spirit of sportsmanship.
“Yeah, we were a little bit sloppy within the first six minutes and a team playing at home when you give them that opportunity, when they score they will rise.
“From that point we struggled to push and they got that second goal. We tried coming back after that penalty we tried coming back but when you push for the equalizer in football and commit the bodies, they got that third goal.
“We need to give them credit, they deserve their victory but what i didn’t like is when your winning all the balls dis appear, it’s not good for a team like Akwa United. We were leading Gombe United 4-0 and we kept throwing the balls for more goals, Akwa is bigger that that and they won’t like if such is done to them.
“We were in the first position before these games and I believe in this team, we will bounce back and I hope so for Akwa.
“The competition on the league this season has been very good and that’s what we are praying for so that the league can get better and our players can be selected for the National team.
