In what could best pass for a revenge match, the female volleyball team of Nnamdi Azikiwe University today defeated the female team of Enugu State University of Technology in response to what the Enugu boys did to UNIZIK boys yesterday.
ESUT volleyball team handed UNIZIK a humbling defeat of 3-0 in the opening game yesterday, Friday 26th January, 2024.
The UNIZIK girls systematically replied for their boys with a resounding 3-0 of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-8.
With the result, UNIZIK Female Volleyball Team have moved into the finals where they will meet FUTO that ran over Imo state university 3-0 to be in the finals.
ESUT and IMSU will battle in the third place in search of bronze medal.
Speaking to Newspathfinder, the captain of the victorious side, Francisca Ogumelu (Aishat) thanked God for the victory which she said they worked hard to achieve.
“Having achieved this feat, we are encouraged and we will make UNIZIK proud in the finals”,
“We worked so hard to get to this point and we will leave no stone unturned till we get the ultimate result which is the gold. South East will continue to hear about UNIZIK Female Volleyball Team”,
“We appreciate the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Charles Esimone, Chairman of the University Sports Committee, Dr Derek Orji for always looking out for the team, our chief Coach, Elochukwu Ezeonu and coach Olisa Chuka, all our fans and supporters for being there for us”,
“The university community should come and cheer us up in the finals”, she appealed.
In the male category, Enugu State University of Technology defeated University of Nigeria Nsukka 3-2 while Imo State University lost 0-3 to Federal University of Technology Owerri.
In the basketball event male, UNIZIK triumphed over ESUT in a game that ended 43-21 while Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike defeated Federal University of Technology Owerri 28-17.
Three matches were played in the male category of football event with two ending in draw. In group A, UNIZIK played 1-1 against FUTO, another draw that left them in a tight corner. The match between University of Nigeria Nsukka and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture ended in a barren draw.
Sporting activities will continue in all the centers tomorrow Sunday 28th January, 2024 begining from 8am.
