Samkay Athletics Academy has been launched officially in Yenagoa the Bayelsa State capital with over eight secondary schools across the State participating.
The Academy is the brainchild of Director General New media to Governor Douye Diri, Dr Kola Oredipe with the aim of adding value to sports development in Bayelsa State.
The one day event featured eight secondary schools which included Bishop Dimeari Grammar School Ovom, Saint Jude’s Girls Secondary School,New Total Child Academy, Yenagoa, Community Comprehensive Secondary School Elebele, Nembe National Grammar School, Ilaw National Academy.
Others are Government Secondary School, Amassoma, Government Secondary School Ekeremor, Federal Science and Technical College, Tungbo, Sagbama.
In a remark chairman of the occasion President of the Bayelsa State customary court Justice Daniel Ayah, applauded the convener of the event Dr Kola Oredipe for his sense of direction and the genuine attempt in pursue their athletic career to the pinnacle, noting that the gesture was capable of nurturing talents and the discovery of new talents as the club motto implies.
Justice Ayah noted that apart from competitions and keeping the body fit athletics have taken a huge glamour to becoming the hallmark of major sporting events and wealth creation for families, describing the initiative by Samkay Academy as encouraging.
Also, chairman of the Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission, Sir Dr Peter Singabele, commended the Samkay Academy for coming up with the initiative, stating that the move to set up the academy has further demonstrated hope for athletics in the State.
Director of Sports Bayelsa State Sports Council, Sir Braveman Wodi, remarked that the State was rewriting it’s history through sports achievements in the last four years of the prosperity government, stressing that in the next edition Timma Godbless would be discovered under this platform.
He asserted that the Sports Council would work hand in glove with Samkay Academy to nurture the talents that were spotted during the exercise with the team of coaches from the council expressing optimism for a brighter future in athletics in the State.
Earlier CEO of Samkay Academy Dr Kola Oredipe in an address said the essence of the academy was to consolidate on the achievements of the Prosperity administration, pointing out that the vision of the academy is to discover young athletes and expose them to the world.
He asserted that the Samkay Academy would train athletes and expose them with the aim of producing athletes that would represent Nigeria in international competitions
Dr Oredipe thanked various participating schools for making themselves available as well as the Ministry of Youths Sports Development ,the Sports Council and the Prosperity administration for creating an enabling environment for sports to thrive.
In the meantime, Community Comprehensive Secondary School Elebele emerged champions in the 400 x 100 meters relay female. The relay team that has Friday Favour, Sunday Ayo Ezekiel Inegheni, Collins Loveth and Goodluck Idumon put St Jude’s Girls Secondary school and Ijaw National Academy to the sword with a time of 56.06 secs.
Community Comprehensive Secondary School Elebele in the boys 400×100 relay outperformed Government Secondary School Ekeremor and Ijaw National Academy to win the ultimate prize with 46:73 sec.
In the 100 meters event female Jacob Martha of the St Jude’s Girls Secondary Amarata clocked a time of 13:44 sec, Josiah Rejoice of the Ijaw National Academy came second with 13:57 sec, Nworie Victory of Government Secondary Amassoma finished third on 14:4 sec.
Erite Perfect of the Ijaw National Academy won the 100m in the boys event with 11:20 sec, Gowon Bamotu of Government Model Secondary School Ekeremor clock 11:49 sec, Community Comprehensive Secondary School Amalala Moses of Elebele came with 11:62.
SamKay Athletics Academy presented cash gift and medals to all the winners.
