The Chairman, Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC), Chief Patrick Estate Onyedum, on Wednesday welcomed the victorious Vision High School Nnewi who won the Girls’ Cadet trophy at the just concluded MTN Champs Athletics event held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Benin, Edo State.
The athletics programme held from 12th to 14th October, 2023 saw Vision High School Nnewi winning a total Six Gold and Five Silver medals. The school featured in seven events comprising of 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres, 4×100 metres relay, Long Jump, Triple Jump and High Jump for the U-14 cadet category while also featuring in ten events comprising of 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres, 800 metres, 4×100 metres relay, Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, Discus and Shot Put for the U-17 youth category.
The six gold medals’ were from Favour Obiefuna (High Jump) Cadet Girls, Adaeze Eze (100 metres, 200 metres, 4×100 metres and Long Jump) Cadet Girls, Blessing Eze (Shot Put) Youth Girls and for Silver medals, the winners and their events are Ukachukwu Onyedika (High Jump and Triple Jump) Cadet Boys and Favour Ekejiuba (Triple Jump, 400 metres and 100metres) Cadet Girls.
Reacting while receiving the team at his office, the ASSDC Chairman, Patrick Estate Onyedum commended the student-athletes for their heroic performance at the MTN Champ event. The Sports boss stated that his commission is poised towards supporting the growth and development of sports at the grassroots level and schools as can be seen with the success story recorded during the ANSSI sports festival earlier in the year.
Chief Onyedum also eulogized Coach Bakam and the school management for their support towards sports in combination with academics. He admonished the athletes to remain focused, disciplined and work towards improving on their performance in order to become the best in their event.
Responding, the school Athletics Coach, Bakam Alpha Godwin thanked the Chairman for his initiatives and innovation towards sports development. He averred that the school management will not relent in their effort towards sustaining the tempo of sports development and academic excellence.
High points of the visit was the presentation of the trophy won by the school to the Chairman ASSDC and a group photograph with the student-athletes. Also present during the visit was the Director of Sports ASSDC, Madam Faith Okwonna.
