Commissioner for Information Anambra state Mr. Paul Nwaosu says a law should be made to properly regulate social media
The commissioner made these statement in an interview with newsmen after the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) Anambra State council press week held at the Godwin Ezeemo international press center Awka with the theme: “Traditional media and threat of the social media: implications for national development”.
In his words; “The threat is an obvious one but what are we doing to counter it. Are we proposing some ethical standards for the social media. As it is now, everybody is a Journalist by virtue of holding a phone.
“Our narrative should be, what exectly should be done to make them conform to the eithics of the profession just as the traditional media is being regulated by the NUJ and the guild of editors, nobody is regulating the social media and this is why anybody can just post a fake narrative about somebody.
“What they are doing is not Journalism. It is junk and it is unacceptable. It is a sin in Journalism. Someone because he doesn’t like your face will just post a negative write-up against you.
“Journalism is about truth. It is about accuracy. It is about fact. They just tell fancy stories to suit their way”.
