Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka has shown interest to host the 20th anniversary of the biennial South East Universities Games (SEUGA).
This disclosure was made by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Charles Esimone, during a courtesy visit to his office by the President of the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA), Emeka Ogbu.
NUGA President had earlier disclosed during the visit that the SEUGA games which is the biggest regional games bringing together all the Universities in the South East Geopolitical zone started and was first hosted by UNIZIK in 2002 under the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Pita Ejiofor with Mr. Tony Nwajiugo who doubled as the Director of Sports and Chief Coach of the institution.
Comrade Ogbu said that it will be a significant moment in the annals of history of Sports and Recreation for the institution to host the 20th anniversary of the games under the leadership of the present Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Charles Esimone, FAS.
Prof. Esimone on his part said he was baffled by the information on the history behind the games, stating that his administration sees sports excellence and advertisement as on of the pillars that will enable the vision for ‘Project 200’ to be achieved before the end of his administration.
Prof Esimone disclosed that planning and organization will commence immediately to ensure successful hosting of the games towards the fourth quarter of the 2023 year.
The Voice Chancellor also said that the institution has started sports scholarship by way of concessional admission for students who have the skills and special flair for sports.
He disclosed that the process has been on for three sessions while also expressing his resolve in ensuring that the stadium under construction will be completely ready before the end of his administration.
