An appeal court in Senegal has upheld a jail sentence for the mayor of the capital city, Dakar.
Mayor Barthélémy Dias had been found guilty of “intentional bodily harm resulting in death without intention to kill and illegal possession of weapons without authorisation”.
It centres on the 2011 death of a man during a political clash.
Mr Dias was handed a six-month prison sentence as well as an 18-month suspended one.
Mr Dias, 46, previously said he had acted in self-defence.
He was elected in February and is a strong opposition voice against President Macky Sall.
Mr Dias’ lawyer is advising the mayor to appeal again and says the implication of the verdict does not currently threaten his mayoral mandate.
